THE HORIZON REPORT- Exciting times ahead!

There is one last thing that I'd like to add!

I read the Horizon Report.. IT WAS FASCINATING

It basically identifies the six emerging technologies that are making their way into education and in the next five years will have a huge impact.

Reading this you start to realise how much change is likely to occur in the next 10 years in education.

SO what does the report find will have a large impact-> This is a quick overview..

NEXT 12 MONTHS

Electronic books:

This trend has been strongly enabled by the explosion of tablet computing, which can augment text with interactive experiences, support classroom note-taking and research activities, and allow readers to interact socially.

Mobile devices:

2011 will bring new interfaces and new apps that leverage location-awareness. The mobile device of is a versatile tool that can be easily adapted to a host of tasks for learning, productivity, and social networking.


NEXT 1-3 YEARS

Augmented reality:

Application that allows information ‘layering’ on screens to computers, mobile devices, video, etc and will enhance learning.

Game-based learning:

Emerging games and simulation-based applications that are developed expressly to enhance the learning process.

NEXT 4-5 YEARSà

Gesture-based computing technologies:

Gestures allow the motions of the body to control computing devices.

Learning analytics:

Employs a combination of data-gathering tools and analytic techniques to study student engagement, performance, and progress in practice.


I'm undecided about ipads and electronic books replacing hardcover books. It one way it is logical; save having to print all these books, literature becomes easier to access and more affordable, libraries would have more space! But the downside, look at where music and videos have gone online, there is so much illegal downloading that publishers and authors will have issues; also like viewing a painting in a gallery, it's just not the same as reading a real hard cover book. I personally don't absorb information as well on screen as I do on paper. And what if the technology crashes, then what?And what about blue light? We need to let our eyes and brains rest from the harsh light of computer screens so what will dramatically increasing people's use do for people's health in the long run. There was research done that our brain takes approximately 2 hours to wind down from blue light visuals, so what is this doing for our students when they are studying before they go to sleep. This is something that will need to be considered before the complete transfer to technology is implemented.


The gesture based technology is quite fascinating; having such an interactive way for students to engage in content. But could it distract from the learning experience? It could, I guess it is something that teachers will need to be on top of, they will need to be trained to deal with the technology and how to manage the teaching with it.


Concluding, there are very exciting things happening with ICT and teaching in the near future and thrilled that I get to be a part of it.

David HOCKNEY iPad Art



This is definitely something that I will add into my teaching...

Painting with iPhones/ iPads.

David Hockney is one of the world's most famous and prolific artists and what's great is that even at the age of 71 he is adapting and incorporating new concepts into his practice.

He has not ignored the upcoming technology and just as our curriculum's shouldn't, he is flourishing in the new possibilities. Here he is with one of his iphone paintings..







I would love to introduce this to students, even if it can not make it's way formally into the curriculum, it would be a beneficial process for them to be aware of.
I think I could most certainly write a six week unit on this. It's a drawing task which not only has VELS "Creating and Making" component possibilities, it also has strong implications for VELS "Exploring and Responding". For example, asking students to evaluate the potential strengths and weaknesses of technology based (2d) drawing compared to pencil and ink (3d) drawing. There is SO MUCH potential for this kind of thing!!

NGV ICT REPORT

I just finished researching a project based on ICT resources in the National Gallery of Victoria.

Basically they don't want to be left behind on that technology front so they're connecting with people like ME: young, teacher, ICT friendly to work with in finding how to enhance ICT use.

The aim was to find ways of using ICT and other activities to enhance and expand on gallery experience for students.

It was a seriously eye opening experience.

I spent weeks testing apps for iPhones and iPads, analysing the strengths and weaknesses and ranking them for suitability of use within the gallery space.


It was actually quite a fun experience because I got to play around with a number of art apps that allowed you to draw and edit photographs and paint, etc. I found the best ones were Brushes and Sketchbook Pro, and if working with photographs either Photoshop app or Photogene. This project actually opened up doors creatively for me that I may incorporate into future teaching. In terms of suitability for gallery activities these apps are comprehensive yet had quite a simple layout. They allow for endless creative possibilities and the best thing is that students can take away what they have done in the gallery by exporting to emails or facebook and so on.

AND THAT IS WHAT IS TO IMPORTANT!! I HAVE COME TO REALISE THAT...

- Students can learn a huge amount in a gallery setting and in many settings outside the classroom but the important thing is enabling them to take their findings and creations away from the gallery setting and beyond. I want to see that link between outside classroom learning connect with the curriculum and I believe that ICT can play a huge role in this.

An example of this is, say a student is at NGV and is asked as part of the activities to use an Art App on their Iphone or on an iPad provided, to appropriate a work and then send it off to their facebook or email address or a forum, etc. This is a simple way of extending students beyond the gallery.

Some other uses with these programs for students are:

· Select a number of artworks and merge sections into own depiction of a morphed artwork.

· Students select an artwork and depict it with their own alterations, considering particular elements, such as colour, line, texture, tone and shape.

· Select a number of artworks and merge sections into own depiction of a morphed artwork.

· Using a number of artworks, identify and select various uses of elements and principles and apply these to own interpretation.

· Photograph artwork and edit with tools such as hue altering to create an appropriation.

· Add text to artworks to alter meaning

· Merge photographs of different sections of various artworks

· Download an image of choice and merge it with a photograph the student has taken on their IT equipment to create new concept.

· Use the video programs to create short video clips or documentaries based on works and present to class.


THE BEST THING IS, THESE ACTIVITIES COULD BE APPLIED ANYWHERE, ON A FOOTBALL FIELD, IN THE SCIENCE CLASSROOM , ETC. EXCITING STUFF!!

I'm interested in bringing in these activities into the classroom. So when there are improvements in resources and funding I would love for my students to be able to work with these programs and take their creating home and back to school again on the small screen of an ipad. It's just a small way of learning but it could mean huge things for the curriculum. The big ISSUE is FUNDING. Although I've discovered that there is a new government initiative called "Ipads for Learning": basically students are getting Ipads for free and teachers are getting trained in how to assist students learning with them. It's a trial so it'll be interesting to see if it sticks. I doubt it will, only because so much of art goes beyond a small screen, particularly contemporary art which has popularised public artworks and installation. I can however see the benefit of students being able to access the internet and blogs and videos, etc.

What else did I learn, well I also ranked International gallery websites and evaluated the 'Interactive" and "Education" components of them. I came to found that the really big galleries like GUGGENHEIM and MOMA had fantastic resources that local galleries could not compare to. It really proves that the way of learning is moving to online and to ICT!

    Annie has made some really vital points, particularly regarding transfer in learning. This idea of applying knowledge to create and solve is fundamental to the learning process and lies at the higher end of bloom’s taxonomy. I agree that ICT has the potential to play a huge role in this and given the “scope”, there are so many areas to branch off and benefit from ICT.

ICT Resources and Security: My section of the group assigment

REFLECTION ON RESEARCH & FINDINGS

I found the group assignment research to be very interesting and rewarding. Given that we had options of what we would present, I thought it would be beneficial to really learn something about web security as my knowledge of ICT resources for students and teachers is fairly strong. So I did a combination of the two, as they complement each other. I was very pleased to see that my lecturer said no one else had at all highlighted web security!

What I found was quite fascinating. There are basic measures that teachers and schools can go to in order to block unwanted and harmful content, such as 'google safe search'. However, it is inevitable that unless a school blocks the majority of websites, students will come into contact or be able to access this inappropriate material.

And what does this mean for art students? Or Media students or any student for that matter. Students need to research in order to progress their understanding and ultimately achieve but this would be quite difficult with the majority of internet sites blocked.

So how do teachers and schools find a harmonious balance and enable access to appropriate and suitable content?
It seems that teachers cannot do this on our own. We do have a certain obligation, however it would be impossible without the assistants of others, including tech support, administration and so on. What I've learnt from this research is that it is not the responsibility of JUST the teacher to manage, it requires a WHOLE SCHOOL approach. And that is the best way to successfully protect students and our computers.

Furthermore, students must become aware of the dangers of the cyber world and I believe that teachers owe their students a duty of care by acting on this. My future responsibilities will include taking the time to make known to my students the issues of privacy, safety and security. These can range from very minor to potentially harmful, yet with simple awareness can be avoided. Please see the bottom section of images to read more on OHS and ICT safety.

IT and the Victorian Learning Standards Part 2 of A1

1. ICT supports knowledge-building among teams and enables team members to collaborate, inquire, interact and integrate prior knowledge with new understanding.

ICT provides a rich and flexible learner- centered environment in which students can experiment and take risks when developing new understanding.

My current placement is at a small government co-ed school that stress the importance of ICT in education. This differs to the school that I did my last placement at which is an all boys private school where there was not as much emphasis on ICT in their visual arts education.

I believe this is can be explained firstly by the prerogative of the head teacher of visual arts who integrates ICT into his teaching plan. Secondly by the lower budget of the school resulting in fewer materials to work with.

This has been a very interesting, rewarding experience as the work outcomes have differed from the traditional student paintings, ceramics and drawings.

Being quite conceptual classes, a lot of students are encouraged to work with ideas where the primary concern is their work, rather than crediting a technically and aesthetically advanced piece of work.

A large number of students work digitally to create work, using the Adobe programs such as Premier Pro for video editing or Photoshop for image editing. Whether they worked with their own photographs or used images pulled from the web the standard and variety of work was remarkable.

The students’ skills in these programs were surprisingly advanced at a senior level, in fact almost at a university level. I believe this is because they had begun learning digital program skills at a young age and steadily built on these.

This form of art making allows for greater success throughout the cohort. Students who once felt uncomfortable with mediums like drawing and painting are becoming more open to art as they see another way to explore creativity. In this way ICT provides a rich and flexible learner environment. ICT presents unique opportunities for supporting creativity (Brown, 2002) and extending visual arts “beyond clay, crayons and paint” (Stankiewicz, 2004: 88).

Another benefit of ICT is visual arts is that students are less precious about creating their work. Ideas can be tested and just as easily undone so they are more confident to take risks with these computer programs. So in this way, experimentation becomes a whole lot easier.

In terms of my own pedagogy, ICT is crucial to the way that I teach. Having a laptop and projector in the art room means that resources can be easily presented to students at the click of a button. Having the ability to present images and information readily on an overhead from my computer is fundamental to students developing new understanding. It surely beats carrying around an old encyclopedia or book of images.

Update on ADOBE PROGRAMS AND some GREAT LINKS I READ

I had my PD meeting with the head of media at my placement school; for privacy sake lets call him "John"...

John had a wealth of ICT knowledge, he's like an ICTcyclopedia! He is a living and breathing ADOBE textbook!

So What did I learn...

PREMIERE PRO is much like iMovie, which I've had a great deal of experience with. So I was able to pick apart the variations in layouts, etc. What I will say though is that it's obvious that Premiere Pro is a MUCH more advances version of iMovie: the toolbars and available effects give an extensive range of options. You can basically do a whole lot more with Premiere Pro and it's a fantastic program for students at any level to use, whether it be secondary or tertiary level.

What I like most about it is:
- The ability to do titles and the range of effects for these
- Having the ability to work on a number of audio and visuals simultaneously and how easy it is to overlap and sync these in together.
- Ease of cutting and cropping clips and audio
- Visual editing abilities are incredible

TWO THUMBS UP!

PHOTOSHOP is all about practice, I know the key things for this and would be able to teach with the skills that I have, so now it is about spending time to learn the short cuts and really nifty tricks.

ILLUSTRATOR is actually ok. My PD didn't cover a huge amount of Illustrator but John did direct me to some tutorials that I can look over when I need to. The simple steps are quite easy but Illustrator will take a bit of instruction and experience before I feel really comfortable with it.

SO, The PD was a success. And the learning continues !

LEARNING THE ADOBE PROGRAMS!! SOME GOALS :)

I've just started teaching Media studies and Media arts on my practicum to year 8,9,10 and 11 students... let's just say it became apparent that my Adobe skills are not quite as strong as I thought they were.
So, I've set up 2 professional development days with my mentor and the head of media at my placement school. I'm a little nervous to be honest, I am setting myself up for a bit of shame.
No shame, No gain! As they say.

My goals:
- Improve on photoshop, particularly with layering, general digital editing and effects, etc.
- I'm completely new to Premiere Pro so I want to learn the basics of this and build from it.
- Finally, Illustrator! If I walk into a job next year and are set to teach Vis Comm. I'll be in a bit of trouble at the level I'm at now. So I want to focus on improving my skills here to.

All of these programs I will need for Art and Studio Art teaching in the future, so I think it's important to get on top of these. I am lucky in that I do understand how the programs function, it is more a matter of experience, remembering and becoming more of an expert!

What little has been written of visual arts teachers’ use of technology consistently indicates that, while some teachers have embraced new technologies, many continue to use ICT in a limited manner. Little, if any, research currently addresses the factors that impact on visual arts teachers’ willingness to integrate ICT, particularly within the2 Australasian Journal of Educational Technology, 2008, 24(1)

Australian context. This paper proposes that the values, attitudes and beliefs of visual arts teachers can have a significant impact on whether they embrace and integrate ICT as part of their teaching practice, and whether they choose to take up professional learning opportunities.


The potential of ICT in secondary visual arts classrooms

ICT presents unique opportunities for supporting creativity (Brown, 2002) and extending visual arts “beyond clay, crayons and paint” (Stankiewicz, 2004: 88). This potential was recognised as far back as the 1980s when Crowe (1988) commented that ICT could assist with exploring design problems, enhance artistic decision making and provide new opportunities for learning. Since then the literature has continued to highlight the potential for ICT in supporting visual arts teaching: “For visual education these are incredibly exciting times offering new possibilities” (Long, 2001: 262).

Drawing and painting software, digital still and video cameras, electronic portfolios, scanners, colour laser printers, samplers and sound mixers, image manipulation, video editing, 3D animation, Internet and web page construction can all play a role in supporting students’ artistic expression (Ashford, 2002; Brown, 2002; Neylon, 1996; Taylor, 1999). Furthermore, as a medium for exploring solutions to design problems (Crowe, 1988; Freedman, 1991; Matthews, 1997), students are able to record and save ideas quickly, manipulate line and colour, modify and incorporate images and employ motion (Hubbard & Greh, 1991). ICT can allow students who might not possess skills with traditional media to focus more on the message and less on execution of art works, thus enhancing self expression (Long, 2001; Wang, 2002; Wood, 2004). Mistakes can be easily corrected, resulting in decreased anxiety and promotion of experimentation, which lies at the heart of creativity (Freedman, 1991; Grenfell, no date; Hicks, 1993; Wood, 2004). While new technologies do not, of course, replace traditional art processes they do extend the possibilities of art expression, communication and perception (Wang, 2002; Wood, 2004).


With an ever increasing emphasis on still and animated imagery, symbols and iconography in society, analysis, interpretation, extrapolation and evaluation of visual imagery has become just as important as art creation. Students need to be wise consumers, familiar with how the mass media operates (Hicks, 1993) and visual arts education has an important role to play in preparing students as visually literate and critical members of society (Brown, 2002; Schwartz, 1991). Furthermore, as the use of digital media has expanded, new career opportunities have opened up for visual artists. Students with knowledge, skills and proficiency in digital art and design are well situated to obtain employment in commercial visual arts contexts, such as advertising, film, animation and other computer graphic industries (Matthews, 1997; Taylor, 1999). Web 2.0 technologies such as Second Life and Flickr, together with the expanding games industry, represent environments in which digital visual art and design skills provide new opportunities for self expression, as well as enhanced commercial potential.


Technology provides exciting opportunities for enriching and transforming visual arts teaching, providing teachers and students alike with new tools to access, organise and present information and to enrich lessons through multimedia (Bridwell & McCoy, 1991; Garnons-Williams, 2002; Schwartz, 1991; Wood, 2004). Technology enables the establishment of communities of practice and cooperative learning (Henning, 2000;Phelps and Maddison 3

Hicks, 1993; Neylon, 1996), with communication not only between students and teachers, but between students from different schools, countries or cultures, and with practising artists from around the globe. The world wide web also provides a virtual international gallery for students’ work (Loveless, 2003). ICT can engage and inspire students, and this has been cited as a factor influencing ready adoptors of ICT (Grenfell, no date; Long, 2001; Wood, 2004)


What role is ICT currently playing in the secondary visual arts classroom?


The majority of the teachers highlighted the benefits of ICT in accessing, organising and presenting information. Seven teachers, for instance, discussed its role in supporting student research, providing immediacy and the ability to search for obscure artists and art movements. “With ICT we have access to every image and every artist. No books have it all. We can access all galleries, Australian and international” (Liam). These benefits were particular significance for this group of rural teachers as there was a real sense that “the world is at our fingertips” (Kevin). “The world can come to us. In a rural area we are so removed from a lot of culture” (Liam). Jodie explained that technology helps art teachers keep up with what is happening in contemporary art practice, views reinforced by Diana. “We can access more exciting things now, like performance art. Kids can now experience a whole range of art influences, film, technology and art practice. Kids can see what is happening overseas”. The ease and efficiency of displaying images, for instance by using PowerPoint and a data projector, was also a strength; “Now images can be larger, on a grander scale; they are more real”. Beth commented that she could “reuse it all, it is more interactive, keeps kids occupied. ICT can be quick and allows the classroom to be more dynamic”.

While most teachers used ICT for theory, about half indicated that they were using technology with their students to create art works. These teachers indicated that ICT helped students play around with art and see progressive changes. Beth, for example, encouraged her students to use ICT in their body of work, including digital photography and scanning images from pieces they had created.


Interestingly, however, none of the teachers referred to harnessing ICT to transform their pedagogy. For instance, no reference was made to implementing webquests, virtual excursions or other online learning experiences, or to including interpersonal exchanges, with students communicating with other students or artists from the community or from different cultures. No teachers referred to using the web to assist students to exhibit their work.


Conclusion


This study indicates that the adoption and integration of ICT by visual arts teachers is as similarly diverse as that by teachers more broadly. While some teachers have led the way with innovative and exciting applications of technology, others continue to avoid it all together and this is exacerbated and perpetuated by beliefs about the nature of visual arts and the relationship between technology and creativity. This study reinforces the findings of other studies that suggest professional development is not simply about ‘attending courses’ or ‘receiving training’, but that it is much more complex and proactive, and requires a clear emphasis on addressing not just ‘how’ to do it, but on ‘why’ it should be done (Higgins & Mosley, 2001). Certainly, understanding teachers’ beliefs and values is a vital ingredient in effective support (Taylor, 1999) and studies such as this are essential in enabling school systems to support teachers in ways which take account of teachers’ values, attitudes, beliefs, motivations, and discipline specific concerns.
